Medical archives, such as Vendor Neutral Archives (VNAs), have often been adopted individually, as siloed systems within individual departments. A siloed approach increases costs and inefficiencies, the most significant of which may be the impact on already over-burdened IT staff. In contrast, taking an enterprise approach to medical archives helps IT staff to function more efficiently to manage all types of hospital data.

Blog - VNA: Neither Vendor-Neutral nor Archive

VNA technologies offer many benefits for DICOM image files. However, hospitals have other types of data which are important to patient records and for which health IT must provide solutions to store, protect and share that data. Even for DICOM images, a VNA is neither Vendor-Neutral nor an archive. It is better understood as being a PACS-Neutral repository in which data can be better managed. What’s needed to meet hospital requirements for all data, is an Application-Neutral repository combined with a platform designed for healthcare data management.

Blog - Why RAID 6 Stops Working in 2019

As data continues to grow at exponential rates, the pressure on disk drives to keep up is mounting. RAID 5, which protects data against failure of a single drive, is no longer sufficient: in a 12TB drive system the risk of losing data during a rebuild after failure has risen to 62%. Double-parity RAID 6 systems are now recommended as the standard to guard against data loss. But, the end of RAID 6 is coming, as more expensive, disk-consuming, triple-parity RAID 7 will be required (based on at current growth rates) by 2019. In this article, technologist John Macy advises health IT professionals to take a more balanced approach to data protection. By combining software backup and archive together with RAID protection, Macy explains that hospitals can extend the life of these technologies while lowering the risk to data.

For those in the process of planning to exit the National Programme for IT for the provision of Radiology PACS, you might think data migration is the first step. But many Trusts don’t understand what their fundamental issue really is. They talk of procurements to replace PACS and RIS solutions, when the issues they face do not actually necessitate that approach. In this blog, we explore the first question that needs to be asked: “what are you migrating from, and what do you want to migrate to?” Read more>>>
