Overview of position
Apprentice Software Engineer (ASE) is a role within the Engineering department to support the Software Development teams in a wide range of areas. This includes product support, test and QA, performance measurement and deployment. As experience and knowledge increases there will be opportunities for software development for both internal and production use. The ASE will need to gain familiarity with the components of the HealthStore® product, and they are likely to respond to support requests directly, working with the Support and Services teams, developers, and the product codebase. The ASE will receive guidance and support from the SEM and members of the Development team.
Over recent years, the Development team has adopted an Agile Scrum model in software development, and the Agile philosophy is being adopted in the wider business. You will be joining at a time of positive change in how our software is engineered, built, tested and deployed, and you are highly likely to be working with the latest technologies in automated test and deployment in support of our move to a DevOps, CI/CD environment, for both on-premise and cloud customers.
This position is a Level 6 Apprenticeship leading to a Batchelor’s degree in Digital and Technology Solutions Professional at London South Bank University (LSBU). This is a four-year, part-time course with 20% of time being spent on learning or training.
Primary Objectives and Responsibilities
- Developing a deep understanding of the product codebase and the underlying technologies to gain an expert understanding of the product and how it is used by our customers
- Determine the root cause of any support issue either independently or with the support of the development team
- Primary point of contact for escalated support cases for the HealthStore® product components
- Working closely with the development team to support new developments
- Providing internal support by provisioning and configuring test and demonstration systems for the Development, Quality Assurance and Test functions
- Developing internal tools to automate repetitive or time-consuming tasks
- Taking an active part in the software development lifecycle, including sprint planning, review and retrospective ceremonies and to work with other team members and stakeholders to support the development and delivery of quality software
Required Experience / Qualifications / Attributes
- Three ‘A’ levels to the minimum standard required for entry to LSBU
(BCC for academic year 2022/23), including Computer Studies or similar subject - GCSE passes in Mathematics and English Language
- A keen interest in technology and an aptitude for coding
- Good personal and written communication skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft 365 or similar business productivity tools (e.g. Excel, Word)
- Able to work effectively in a team-based software development environment
- Motivated to work online at home using conferencing and collaboration tools
Location
Although BridgeHead is a fully remote organization in the UK, apprentices will have regular face-to-face meetings with their manager, so preference will be given to candidates in South-West London and North Surrey areas.
