RAPid™ Version 25A SP1 – Release Summary

Below is a summary of the latest features and enhancements now available following the release of BridgeHead’s RAPid™ Data Protection solution version 25A SP1.

Backup & Restore

VM Image Granular File Restore Performance

  • Performance has been improved when restoring individual files or folders, this should be at least 20% faster depending upon how many files have been selected for restore. The process has been optimised and can be tuned with a new parameter; this is explained in the Service Node guide. The legacy tool HT.EXE now also supports VM Images.

Optimized Image Backups

  • Previously if a volume had been extended several times backup failures could occur. This issue has now been addressed so that optimized backups work regardless of how many times a volume has been extended. Also note: a Hotfix was made available post release to further improve this, so if you’re interested in this feature then please contact support for the additional fix.

FileStore™ Reliability & Optimisation

Free Space Monitor

  • Two improvements have been made after feedback from the field; the policy scan can now use X number of days as well as a specific date range to limit the scope. This adds greater flexibility when configuring the archive policy in very large environments that use free space monitor polices.

Admin Console

With each release we continue to add more functionality to the web UI which means the administrator experience improves and there’s fewer reasons to rely on the older Management Console tools for day to day management tasks. With SP1 we’ve made the following improvements:

Schedule Manager

  • This adds another key management facility so that administrators can now access a new Schedule Manager sidebar to review and manage schedule settings
    • Calendar View
    • Copy / Delete
    • Import/Export
    • Modify (comment, counters, excluded dates)
    • Rename Schedule.

Control Node (CN) Web Performance

  • Larger sites had reported performance issues with the CN Web service, improvements have been made to optimize this service.

FileStore™ & Restore Utilities

  • Miscellaneous improvements and fixes to enhance the user experience , review the release notes for more information.

Supportability

CNCLi

  • New commands are now available to rename credentials, schedule & objects  (these are to support admin console functionality). However, the new rename object command also renames fields whose names depend on the object name such as the journal and log file names and the saveset path names.

Log Save Format

  • When using the management console tools (CN Object or Queue Manager) the last used log save format is remembered so future saves will default to whatever format was last used.

Notable Documentation Updates

  • MT Guide updates to show PowerMax support
  • Sophos Stub exclude information updated for Intercept X & Core Agent.

RAPid™ Version 25A – Release Summary

Below is a summary of the latest features and enhancements now available following the release of BridgeHead’s RAPid™ Data Protection solution version 25A.

Multi-stream SQL Performance

RAPid 25A introduces high-speed SQL backup and restore using Microsoft’s Virtual Device Interface (VDI), scaling up to 32 parallel streams. Customers can expect performance gains of 30-50GB per minute (infrastructure dependent), enabling much quicker backups of multi-terabyte databases – well within backup windows. In parallel, the same applies to system restores, offering faster recovery of your critical data.

FileStore™ Performance

Our latest FileStore™ archiving enhancements include a more resilient Free Space Monitor (FSM) connection and improved control over archiving scans to target a specific date range. This helps customers maximize/optimize the amount of data they can archive. And this performance is further boosted when using NDR with JBOD storage.

Admin Console

RAPid 25A takes another step toward centralized management with the full integration of Alert Manager into the web-based Admin Console. Now you can monitor and manage alerts – alongside objects, jobs, and queues – all in one streamlined interface.

Security & Dependencies

Finally, as we continuously update RAPid to address software dependencies and known vulnerabilities, we strongly recommend upgrading to the latest version of the software to ensure you’re taking advantage of the latest features and safeguard your environment.

RAPid™ Platform Improvements In 2024

BridgeHead’s RAPid™ Data Protection solution has evolved significantly in 2024, with enhancements and new features introduced across three releases: 24A, 24A SP1, and 24A SP2. Below are a number of product improvements issued across these three releases.

Administration Tools

The Admin Console is a web-based admin portal that has advanced substantially in 2024 providing a modern UI for all your day-to-day admin tasks without needing to directly log on to a control node. You can quickly see the status of jobs, monthly backup volumes as well as managing objects, queues and jobs. Improvements introduced this year include:

  • Object control – full control to modify all fields or delete / undelete / purge jobs
  • Queue management – full control to allow queue edit / start / stop / delete & a new ‘Pause Queue’ option
  • Job management – edit / delete from queues
  • UX improvements to make it easier to find jobs based on status
  • GCP VM restores using restore utilities
  • Save or reuse filters (for viewing objects, jobs).

Backup & FileStore Functionality

For Cloud workloads, it’s now possible to automatically create objects using a master job, which greatly reduces the overhead of manually creating an object for each new VM. And another useful operational improvement is an automated check that helps flag if a sub job has failed – which is important to know since without all sub jobs running successfully you might have an incomplete backup.

  • Automation option to configure AWS / GCP master sub jobs
  • MEDITECH / Cloud backups – confirmation of sub job success status (Finale Job)
  • Refreshed Service Node for Linux with ACL support
  • Dell Powerflex Storage Arrays now supported for MEDITECH ISB/IDR backups.

Microsoft 2012 Era Product Support

Microsoft has a clear timetable for when support ends for each of their products. Support for Microsoft’s 2012 set of products is coming to end (as highlighted in our own documentation). These products have been in extended support for the last 3 years, which means you now have to pay to get updates. So, if you’re running these products in your environment, now is the time to think about upgrading – so please take note of the following Microsoft deadlines. RAPid will follow the Microsoft timetable and deprecate support for the 2012 products accordingly.

Performance & Fixes

This is another areas of constant evolution as a result of feedback from customers and our support team. There’s been a big focus on FileStore this year with improvements across the board. As a result, we highly recommended upgrading to the latest version of RAPid – version 24A SP2.

  • Over 30 fixes & performance improvements for FileStore
  • Greatly improved performance for EDR2NDR migration utility.
