Healthcare Data Matters Newsletter Issue 5

Mar 19, 2026

BridgeHead Newsletter 5 Featured-Image
March 2026

Healthcare Data Matters

Welcome to Issue #5 of Healthcare Data Matters. In this edition, we share some of our latest blogs, thought leadership, customer stories, and helpful resources spanning topics, such as interoperability and standards, AI, maternity and neonatal safety, and more. We also provide some product updates from the latest versions of HealthStore® and RAPid™ – also looking ahead to what’s coming in future releases. And, given it’s ‘event season’ in healthcare, we list some of the upcoming events where you can be sure to find us if you are interested in learning how BridgeHead is helping healthcare organizations across the globe with their clinical data management and protection strategies.

Blogs

In this edition, our blogs explore the foundations that quietly underpin digital healthcare. Our featured blog takes a thoughtful (and slightly tongue-in-cheek) look at interoperability standards like FHIR, OpenEHR, and OMOP. Others range from a focus on the unseen “road crew” enabling shared patient records in the NHS; the risks of playing hide and seek with patient data; through to the information gaps that can impact maternity care where we look at why continuity and context matter more than ever. We also challenge assumptions around AI accuracy in healthcare and highlight why strengthening data foundations is essential in supporting safer, smarter care.
A cartoon depicting 3 characters: FHIR OpenEHR and OMOP; walking into a bar...
He’s back! Adam Coombes returns with his trademark humour to unpack FHIR, OMOP, and OpenEHR – cutting through the confusion and sharing when and how each standard really shines. Read here.

AI Accuracy In Healthcare Isn’t An Algorithm Problem

AI is moving fast in healthcare, but accuracy, trust, and real-world impact continue to lag behind the hype. In this blog, Bobby Edwards shares a pragmatic, frontline perspective on why many AI initiatives struggle once they leave the lab. Read here.

The ‘Road Crew’ That Enables The SPR To Be A Globally Recognised ‘Headline Act’!

Adam Coombes returns with his take on why a Clinical Data Repository is key for the NHS’ Single Patient Record (SPR) strategy. In his usual, unique and humorous style, Adam uses the analogy of a rock/music concert to make his point. Read here.

Thought Leadership

You can watch or listen to a recent podcast hosted by Digital Health on the subject of “The Interoperability Conundrum: Is “Analog to Digital” Enough?”. The podcast features BridgeHead’s Adam Coombes and our guest and friend of BridgeHead, Andy Meiner from System Integrated Squared – a recognised thought leader in the interoperability space. And, check out the recent webinar (again hosted by Digital Health) on the subject of “Strengthening Maternity And Neonatal Safety Through Reliable Access To Historical Data”. BridgeHead’s John McCann is joined by guests, Gayle Dellow, Lead Digital Midwife, Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Hadleigh Stollar, Chief Executive, Healthcare Innovation Consortium, to explore how NHS organisations can improve safety and assurance by providing historical context across maternity and neonatal services.
Digital Health Unplugged: The Interoperability Conundrum: Is “Analog to Digital” Enough?

[Podcast] The Interoperability Conundrum: Is “Analog to Digital” Enough?

The NHS has made significant progress moving from analogue to digital, but many organisations are discovering that “digital” does not automatically mean data is usable, shareable, or truly interoperable. In a recent Digital Health podcast, Adam Coombes (BridgeHead) and Andy Meiner (SI Squared) explore why large volumes of NHS data remain difficult to operationalise — from information locked in departmental systems and legacy EPRs to the ongoing reliance on paper and scanned records — and why achieving real interoperability requires more than digitisation alone. Listen to the podcast.

This section provides the latest product updates regarding BridgeHead’s HealthStore® Clinical Data Repository and RAPid™ Data Protection solutions.

HealthStore® – Clinical Data Repository

RAPid Overview Page Feature Image

Faster, smarter document ingestion, now live in HealthStore®

We’re pleased to announce a significant improvement to the way HealthStore® handles clinical documents. Previously, almost every document uploaded into the system had to be converted to a displayable format (typically PDF) and stored in full before it could be registered – a time-consuming process that also created unnecessary copies of files.

With the new versions of HealthStore, we have introduced a FHIR-based ingest model that changes this completely. Documents are now stored in their original format and registered immediately, with any conversion only taking place at the moment a user actually needs to view them. This means faster ingestion, less duplicated data, and a more efficient system overall – all while making HealthStore’s search and analytics capabilities more powerful than ever.

Coming next: using AI to tackle the legacy paper records problem

Looking ahead, we have an exciting initiative in HealthStore® development that addresses one of the most persistent challenges for records management departments. The vast volume of legacy paper documents are often ‘digitized’ by scanning them into a single large PDF for each patient’s folder, but remain largely unsearchable and unstructured. Our goal is to use a combination of AI tools, including optical character recognition (OCR), large language models, and intelligent classification techniques, to automatically decompose these documents into meaningful clinical components, identify their content, and register them in a structured, searchable format within HealthStore.

This would mean that decades of scanned patient records, currently difficult to access or act upon, could be transformed into properly indexed clinical data, leading to both better patient outcomes as well as offering a source of rich data. This is a future initiative and is not yet available, but will represent a major step forward in how we can serve both clinicians and records teams in healthcare organizations worldwide.

RAPid™ Data Protection 25A SP2 Release

BridgeHead’s RAPid™ Data Protection solution version 25A SP2 was issued at the end of December 2025. This is very much a roll-up release including a number of fixes as well as dependency security updates. We have also added support for HPE’s two newest tape libraries – the MSL2024 G4 and the 1/8 G3 autoloader.

As always, we strongly recommended that customers upgrade to the latest version to ensure they maintain their systems with the latest software and are protected against known issues. For more information on specific fixes, please refer to the release notes for each component.

Coming next: new Nutanix VM Agent with full support for the latest Nutanix V4 API

Development is already underway and progressing nicely for the next major RAPid™ Data Protection solution release for 2026, RAPid 26A, estimated to be generally available by the Summer. One of the headline features is a new Nutanix VM Agent with full support for the latest Nutanix V4 API. This enhancement enables seamless backup of Nutanix Virtual Machines, giving RAPid users a simple, reliable way to protect their Nutanix environments.

The new agent builds on RAPid’s existing capability to protect MEDITECH workloads on Nutanix, extending the same robust data protection to Nutanix virtual machines. With the new VMware subscription model in place, some organizations are exploring alternative options for their current and future virtual platform strategy. This new development offers our customers more choice and flexibility on how they can manage their VM estate.
